Routledge / Rutledge / Ruttledge Family History

Several years ago I spent many many months researching the history and Genealogy of my family Surname, Ruttledge. I discovered that the Two "T" version of Ruttledge is found exclusively in Ireland and Predominantly in Connaught in the counties of  Mayo, Galway & Sligo, in earlier centuries it was often transcribed with 1 T as Rutledge

The Co Mayo Ruttledges ( My Father came from Ballina ) Were thought to have been descended from transplanted "Border Reiver" Routledges who settled in Ireland after King James 1st of England ( also King James VI of Scotland ) Pacified the England / Scotland border and united the two Kingdoms

There's another theory that these Ruttledges are not transplanted foreign freebooters but are indeed indigenous Irishmen once named Mulderrig (Meaning Red Chief) and who's Irish name was Anglicised to become Ruttledge ( Meaning Red Stream )

Whichever theory you choose to believe you'll find many a fascinating Rutledge, including a pioneer Everest mountaineer, The Sweetheart of Abraham Lincoln, The Youngest Signer of the US Declaration of independance, his brother who also signed the Declaration and worked on the draft of the United States Constitution, a Rutledge candidate for first US president running along side George Washington, The Republic of Irelands first ever Minister for Justice, also a bit of a rebel involved in Irelands Declaration & Constitution, the conclusion I drew was that I came from a long line of rebels, but these were rebels who fought only for justice, for freedom & the betterment of humankind, you can see my genealogy site by clicking the link below
